For almost two years the Co-owners of Herb En Routes micro-farm in Ocean Beach have been growing sustainable and local produce on .25 acres on a previously vacant lot on Voltaire St. They were selling organically grown produce to local restaurants, such as Tender Greens, To The Point Cafe, Farmhouse Cafe, and the Pearl Hotel and Restaurant. Additionally, they had a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that provided veggies for 25 local families.

Although they have enjoyed every minute of it, the co-owners have decided this endeavor to be too time consuming. So, they have decided to turn the farm into a community garden to allow them to work towards other careers but still continue to serve the community. Their mission of providing local produce and opportunities for teaching sustainable agriculture lives on!

Herb En Routes would like to get the word out to Point Loma and Ocean Beach that plots are available. Please share this post with your friends.

Ocean Friendly Gardens in Ocean Beach http://obtowncouncil.org/ocean-friendly-gardens-in-ocean-beach/ http://obtowncouncil.org/ocean-friendly-gardens-in-ocean-beach/#comments Mon, 16 Dec 2013 22:20:57 +0000 http://obtowncouncil.org/?p=674 On Saturday, December 16th, Ocean Beach Town Council board members, Gretchen Kinney-Newsom, Jody Thompson, Marin Green, Jenn Avoledo and Jon Carr joined Surfrider volunteers on an Ocean Friendly Garden tour.

The tour started at long-time resident Flicka Dormer’s beach house where we got an up close look at her Surfrider-installed Ocean Friendly Garden.

Garden’s are certified as “Ocean Friendly” when they meet the following Criteria:

Conservation of water, energy and habitat

Permeability of soil and surfaces, which lets water slow down and sink

Retention of rainwater and prevention of wet weather runoff

From there, we toured the neighborhood from Orchard & Cable up Coronado to Sunset Cliffs and back again. All the way learning about our native plants, the importance of retaining our rainwater, and issues with urban runoff into our coastal waterways. The tour was informative and fun on a beautiful December day in Ocean Beach!
