Transients were using the public space as a toilet and trash was strewn everywhere. Neighboring the bulletin board is Willie’s Shoe Shine and Willie told us that the trees hadn’t been pruned in 15 years.

With just a little over two hours, two cans of spray paint, and a gallon of Caribbean Blue paint from OB Hardware, we were able to transform the space from nuisance to welcoming. Our next project will be to install ocean-friendly landscaping around the bulletin board. We hope this community project encourages all to “RESPECT OB.”

BEFORE - Overgrown trees block the community bulletin board, rusty grate, trash and litter strewn everywhere.

OBTC was excited to use spray paint in a good/positive way!

AFTER - fresh coat of Caribbean Blue paint from OB Hardware, beautified grate, trees pruned back, and trash removed.

New OB Community Garden – Now Leasing Plots! http://obtowncouncil.org/new-ob-community-garden-opening/ http://obtowncouncil.org/new-ob-community-garden-opening/#comments Sun, 05 Jan 2014 01:15:02 +0000 http://obtowncouncil.org/?p=694

Herb en Routes is opening a COMMUNITY GARDEN in OB. Come help utilize a portion of their .25 acre lot to grow sustainable fruits and vegetables to share with family and friends. They are now leasing January through June 2014! Pricing is based on a six-month lease term.

They Provide:

  • Water
  • Growing Space
  • Greenhouse/Tool Storage

You Bring:

  • Enthusiasm to Grow
  • Seeds/Plants
  • Tools

Click Here for more information on plot sizes and pricing or to learn more about our community garden membership.

For almost two years the Co-owners of Herb En Routes micro-farm in Ocean Beach have been growing sustainable and local produce on .25 acres on a previously vacant lot on Voltaire St. They were selling organically grown produce to local restaurants, such as Tender Greens, To The Point Cafe, Farmhouse Cafe, and the Pearl Hotel and Restaurant. Additionally, they had a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that provided veggies for 25 local families.

Although they have enjoyed every minute of it, the co-owners have decided this endeavor to be too time consuming. So, they have decided to turn the farm into a community garden to allow them to work towards other careers but still continue to serve the community. Their mission of providing local produce and opportunities for teaching sustainable agriculture lives on!

Herb En Routes would like to get the word out to Point Loma and Ocean Beach that plots are available. Please share this post with your friends.

OB Food & Toy Drive ReCap http://obtowncouncil.org/ob-food-toy-drive-recap/ http://obtowncouncil.org/ob-food-toy-drive-recap/#comments Tue, 24 Dec 2013 22:13:36 +0000 http://obtowncouncil.org/?p=668 The Ocean Beach Town Council and our amazing volunteers delivered nearly 100 care packages to Ocean Beach families and seniors on December 21st. Volunteers helped with the OB Food & Toy Drive throughout the week by sorting, moving, wrapping and packing boxes and bags full of food and toys.

We were also thrilled to be able to bring Christmas trees to our OB families this year, thanks to a generous donation of 100 tabletop trees from Rodney Dow, owner of the Carlsbad Christmas Tree Farm! One mom said her daughter only asked for a tree this year and was so happy to see it, and another child exclaimed “Wow, it really does smell like Christmas!”

Much thanks to Jenn Avoledo, Donna Lamb, Jere Batten, and Claudia Jack for taking leadership roles and their countless hours of work to make this another successful OB Food & Toy Drive — we’re so grateful to them and to everyone who helped all season long!

And a huge thank you to all of our OB Food and Toy Drive partners, donors and sponsors, including OB Kiwanis Club, Point Loma High School JROTC, OB Lion’s Club, Shamrock Foods, Chase Bank, US Bank, Union Bank, Congressman Scott Peters, Assemblywoman Toni Atkins, Rodney Dow, Roger Bresnan, Carol Ladiges of Lighthouse Ice Cream, George Murphy, and all the local OB shops that hosted donation cans!

Check out our Facebook page for more pictures from the OB Food and Toy Drive.

Plastic Bag Ban Resolution http://obtowncouncil.org/plastic-bag-ban-resolution/ http://obtowncouncil.org/plastic-bag-ban-resolution/#comments Sat, 23 Nov 2013 22:27:30 +0000 http://obtowncouncil.org/?p=609 On November 13, the Ocean Beach Town Council passed a resolution in support of a Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance in the City of San Diego.

More than 500 million single-use plastic bags are distributed annually in San Diego, and approximately 3% are recycled. Improper disposal results in plastic bags becoming windblown through our streets, parks, and beaches, clogging our storm drains and sewers, degrading our soils and waterways, and threatening the lives of avian and marine species.

Over 70 California municipalities have enacted ordinances banning or restricting the use of plastic bags.

The OBTC is committed to protecting our natural environment and the public health and welfare of our community’s residents.  Therefore, the OBTC supports a Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance and recommends that the City of San Diego enact a ban on single-use carry-out plastic bags as the most administratively efficient and cost effective measure to address the issues of wasted energy, excess greenhouse gases, litter, and soil and water pollution, and we request Ocean Beach businesses and organizations to stop carrying single-use carry-out plastic bags and to join the Plastic Pollution Coalition (http://plasticpollutioncoalition.org/).

Here is the full OBTC Plastic Bag Ban Resolution.

OB Entryway Project – Proposed Delay by City http://obtowncouncil.org/ob-entryway-project-proposed-delay-by-city/ http://obtowncouncil.org/ob-entryway-project-proposed-delay-by-city/#comments Sat, 23 Nov 2013 18:56:38 +0000 http://obtowncouncil.org/?p=599 We have been informed that the Ocean Beach Entryway Project, Phase II  (the path that connects the OB Entryway to Robb Field) has been delayed and is at risk of losing its funding due to the delay.

City reps have been reporting for months that this project would break ground AND be completed before the end of the year.

In the final hour, we have been informed that the Project is delayed – this is largely attributed to the poor performance of the City Project Manager – which by the way, is the SAME project manager responsible for the Brighton Comfort Station/Bathrooms which took more than 3 years to complete.

The City has made promises that this project would be completed. The City should not break their promise to our community and should complete this project before year-end.

Check out the our Entryway Letter that the OB Community Development Corporation and the OBTC and many other community groups sent to Interim Mayor Todd Gloria, Councilman Kevin Faulconer, and other City officials.
